Description
The Bureau of Industry and Security — BIS — or United States Department of Industry and Security, is an agency under the supervision of the Department of Commerce. This body has as its main goal to protect national security, foreign policy and the economic interests of the United States.
Among its functions are the regulation of exports of sensitive goods and dual-use technologies, the application of export controls and public security laws, and international cooperation in strategic trade. In addition, it monitors the country's defence industrial base and promotes public-private initiatives to protect critical infrastructures.
The BIS manages various lists intended to control exports and restrict transactions with subjects or entities that represent risks to national security or require special authorisations, thus strengthening the compliance with its export policy.
